Mission Statement

Our Vision is “a balanced relationship with our wild neighbours based upon respect and appreciation.” Our Mission is “to provide a safe place for injured and orphaned wild animals to grow and mend until they can return to their natural habitat while encouraging public tolerance and understanding of wildlife.” Our Philosophy is essentially “if you care enough to rescue and bring in the animal, we will put in the time and energy to rehabilitate it.” Therefore we accept all wild animals brought to us, regardless of age, species, color, attitude, origin, injury, or need.

About This Cause

Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation (LSWR) is dedicated to offering a second chance for injured and orphaned wild animals. We are a registered charity, based in Saskatoon and specializing in rehabilitating small mammals and birds with the specific goal of returning these animals back to their natural environment. We provide the full range of treatment services needed to rehabilitate small birds and mammals. We assist the public with issues relating to wildlife; and promote knowledge and appreciation of wild animals and the habitats they depend on for survival. Animals outside the scope of LSWR will be accepted, assessed, stabilized and transferred to the appropriate rehabilitation facility. In its first year of activity, Living Sky Wildlife Rehabilitation cared for 119 birds and 33 mammals. By 2015, that number rose to over 650, necessitating a move to a larger site. In 2022, we received over 2000 animals that required our services. The number of animals will continue to rise as awareness of this resource increases, and will require equal increases in money, energy, and time. Animals are fed specially formulated diets to meet their nutritional needs and provided with the necessary medical care to heal their injuries. All animals are carefully handled to maintain their fear of humans so they can be released back to the wild. LSWR is run by dedicated volunteers and grant-funded students in the summer months to ensure continuity of care to the animals. We are always looking for persons interested in working with the animals or willing to assist with cage building, administration, and the other activities associated with running a wildlife rehabilitation facility. Spring and summer are the primary busy seasons for this work, although some animals must be kept through the winter and are released the following spring. The work is incredibly rewarding, but also exceedingly demanding. Animal care is provided from 7am until 11pm in addition to answering inquiries from the public, while also triaging and assessing incoming animals for illness, injury, or other needs. Your donations make the difference between life and death for some animals. As we grow, choices may need to be made, based on availability of time, resources, funding as to whether or not we can provide the necessities to mend an injured animal. We do not want that to happen, but being reliant on donations leaves us unsure of our annual resources sometimes. Knowing we never have to say "no" to an animal is a gift you can give with your support!
