Mission Statement

At Jocelyn House Hospice it is our mission to carry on the dream of Jocelyn Hutton: adding life to final days for the terminally ill, and their loved ones, by providing care and comfort in a home-like setting.

About This Cause

HISTORY OF JOCELYN HOUSE HOSPICE In October, 1985 Bill and Miriam Hutton donated their family home to the community and founded Jocelyn House Hospice in memory of their daughter Jocelyn, who died of cancer at the young age of 17. A remarkable teenager, Jocelyn lived the last months of her life sharing her message of acceptance, purpose and faith. It is our mission as Jocelyn House Hospice to carry on the dream of Jocelyn Hutton: adding life to final days for the terminally ill, and their loved ones, by providing care and comfort in a home-like setting. MEETING THE NEED IN THE COMMUNITY Many are surprised to learn that there are only 16 hospice beds in Manitoba, 4 of them at Jocelyn House. Of the roughly 260,000 Canadians who die every year, over 70% could benefit from some form of Hospice Palliative Care but only 1/3 of those are given the option. The need for this type of care and ability to live final days fully and among family and friends is significant, and it is critical to ensure Jocelyn House Hospice can remain viable and able to operate in the foreseeable future. OUR DAY TO DAY OPERATION Quality end of life care is the cornerstone of Jocelyn House Hospice. Residents and their families have the information, knowledge and power to make decisions about care. In the spirit of providing the best quality of care, families are encouraged to participate and ask questions. Jocelyn House Hospice is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Jocelyn House staff and volunteers truly understand and are deeply committed to end of life care. The medical team consists of an attending physician, an RN, LPNs, and Health Care Aides, with support from the WRHA Palliative Care Program. Residents also benefit from the care given by our Manager of Spiritual Care and a host of wonderful volunteers who provide much needed support to our staff, residents, and their loved ones. Our team ensures that residents and their families receive the physical, emotional, and spiritual support they need. FEELS LIKE HOME At Jocelyn House, people come and go as they would in their own homes. Residents are encouraged to be as independent as possible and family and friends are welcome at any time. There are opportunities to be in the company of others and for times of solitude. Jocelyn House Hospice is full of life; it is much more than a healthcare facility, it is a home. Jocelyn House is not about dying, it is about LIVING at end of life – with dignity, comfort, understanding and peace.
