About This Cause
WHO WE ARE Since 2009, Up With Women/Exponenti'elles has been delivering poverty reduction services for recently homeless and at-risk women and gender diverse individuals. WHAT WE OFFER Our free 12-month program matches clients with volunteer, professional coaches who provide support through bi-weekly, one-on-one conversations built on clients’ strengths. In-depth career development tools, emotional intelligence assessment tools and personal guidance are augmented by group sessions and workshops. WHO WE SERVE Our core program supports over 300 clients annually in four provinces (British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec) in both French and English. Clients experience a range of barriers to meaningful employment and economic parity including: o 100% experience housing precarity and live below the poverty line; o 85% of clients live with a disability, including physical challenges, neurodiversity, depression, anxiety and PTSD; o 78% have experienced physical and/or sexual violence; o 65% or more identify as immigrant or refugee; o 56% are mothers, 64% of which have 2 children or more; o 33% are under 34. WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT Multiple, intersecting issues lead to women’s and gender diverse individuals' homelessness and housing precarity, but poverty is the common denominator. Other career development programs may focus on securing employment, which can result in ‘survival jobs’ - being underemployed or accepting entry level positions well below skill set and experience to earn a living. Up With Women’s / Exponenti’elles’s program focuses on long term impact. We are committed to helping vulnerable individuals secure decent work and achieve financial self-reliance, ultimately helping to break the cycle of poverty and housing precarity. OUR RESULTS Up With Women/Exponenti’elles’s core program effectively supports clients in securing employment, increasing annual income and improving housing stability. Within six to twelve months of the 2022 program, UWW/EXP clients achieved the following results: o average annual income increased by $15,000 per year (230%); o 39% terminated social assistance; o unemployment was cut almost in half and full time employment increased 1500%; o 1 in 5 finish the program earning over $40,000 per year; o 87% of clients reported strong progress toward achieving goals and greater confidence.
