Canadian Veteran Service Dog Unit (CVSDU)

Ottawa, Ontario, K2A 4E2 Canada

Mission Statement

The Canadian Veteran Service Dog Unit's mission is to train and provide service dogs to Canadian Veterans and First Responders diagnosed with Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and/or Operational Stress Injury (OSI) at no cost to qualified members.

About This Cause

There is no doubt that the benefits of having a Service Dog far outweigh the challenges but having a Service Dog is not the right choice for everyone who has a disability. This is where CVSDU members help veterans with PTSD. CVSDU trainers work with and serve the CVSDU, training puppies and dogs to be service dogs, training dogs and veterans to become qualified teams and advising the Board of Directors on training and programs for the Unit. It takes between $12,000 - $15,000 to purchase, raise and train each Service Dog. To date, CVSDU has trained 30 teams, but we have a waiting list of 20 requests for service dogs. Since the pandemic, the cost of buying a puppy, raising, socializing, and training it to be a service dog has increased dramatically. All funds we raise go to the procurement and training of these dogs and we couldn't do what we do without your support. Thank you for helping us help our veterans and first responders.
