Mission Statement
Red Fox Healthy Living Society transforms the lives of children and youth who face barriers through the power of recreation and mentorship. We do this by providing free active recreation, cultural and arts programs to children, and training local youth to lead them. Our programs foster physical literacy, social development and well being to children and youth who most need extra support. The foundation of our success is our youth leadership continuum, where children and youth can progress from participant (ages 5 - 12) to junior leaders (ages 11 - 14) to youth leaders (ages 15 - 19) to youth interns (ages 18 - 25) to staff members at Red Fox or at workplaces in their community. We also offer youth a full-time paid internship program and part time environmental stewardship program.
About This Cause
Red Fox has two complementary missions: to promote healthy active living among children and youth, and to foster employment and life skills to youth who face barriers. We fulfill our mission by providing free and supportive training and recreation opportunities to children, youth and families throughout Metro Vancouver. Red Fox Healthy Living Society was formed in 2006 to deliver recreation and youth training programs to 150 children and youth in Vancouver's inner city neighbourhood. Since then, we have grown to reach 800 children and youth at weekly programs from the North Shore, to Delta to Maple Ridge. Red Fox works closely with municipalities, Indigenous communities, school districts and other non-profit agencies to share resources and maximize our impact. Students may receive school credit for participating in Red Fox training, and teachers attest that Red Fox inspires students to stay in school, graduate, and pursue post-secondary education. Many of our youth leaders participated in Red Fox Active Play when they were in elementary school. Most of our staff members are Indigenous or racialized young adults and graduates of Red Fox training. Other Red Fox graduates are now working at childcare centres throughout Metro Vancouver. There are waiting lists of youth wanting to join our training, and schools and community organizations wanting Red Fox programs for their children and families. We have two long-term goals: to meet community demand for our programs, and to continue to promote Youth Leaders to staff members, so that all our Active Play and Youth Leadership programs are supervised by local youth. "Being a part of Red Fox has helped me improve my public speaking and communication skills, and has just made me a better person. I am now a staff member at Red Fox and can mentor youth just like I was mentored" Ebony, Red Fox youth leader now staff member.
