About This Cause

Founded in 1963, the Turkish-Canadian Society (TCS) has been instrumental in making Turkish culture a part of the multicultural Canadian society. TCS participates in multicultural festivals and also runs music (Turkish Tunes) and film festivals (Vancouver Turkish Film Festival (VTFF). Toplum Magazine is published every three months and each issue has an overarching topic (e.g., environment, sustainability, education, women's issues). Throughout the years, TCS has organized various arts and cultural activities, such as poetry nights, Turkish language classes, folk dance performances, Turkish choir concerts, art exhibitions, painting workshops, TCS Talks (TCS Talks (online interviews with prominent artists or other publicly recognized figures). Our major annual art/cultural events used to be our Vancouver Turkish Film Festival (VTFF), Turkish Tunes, and Turkish Choir Annual Concert. In addition to these three, we recently started two other major events which will also become annual events of TCS. A painting exhibition on March 8th to showcase the work of women painting artists, and the Vancouver Ataturk Run to commemorate Ataturk, the founder of modern Turkey, and to celebrate youth participation in sports. Two other annual events of the TCS are the Celebration of the Republic and Turkish-Canadian Friendship Day, and the Celebration of the National Sovereignty and Children's Day. All our events and projects are major volunteer undertakings. And we always appreciate all kinds of support from our community, including donations. For the financial sustainability of our cultural programs, we also write/submit grant applications and sometimes become successful. The number of people who define their mother language as Turkish is growing rapidly in BC and in Canada. There are many new coming families with young kids and TCS will be instrumental for keeping these kids familiar with their parent's cultural background. This cultural background is quite rich as in Turkiye, our history of multiculturalism goes back centuries, and it unites many cultural, ethnic, and religious roots that spread through Anatolia, which is known as the cradle of civilization. In a way, our cultural richness reflects a synthesis of humanity. Therefore, Turkish Canadians may contribute a lot to a more equitable, inclusive, and harmonious society in Canada. The Turkish-Canadian Society values peace and dialog and hence organizes programs that bridge different cultural and ethnic backgrounds. TCS has collaborated with different organizations which carry similar aspirations as TCS (e.g., SFU Woodward's Cultural Programs, City of Vancouver, Northwest Film Forum) TCS has plans for a variety of additional arts and cultural activities to be launched in the future and all of them require funding. The support through Benevity will be a great asset for TCS in organizing events to help make BC a more livable place for all.
