Mission Statement
Music Heals Charitable Foundation raises awareness of the healing powers of music and fundraises for music therapy and related services across Canada. Our mission is to increase patient accessibility to music therapy in various clinical and rehabilitation settings such as children’s hospitals, seniors’ homes, palliative care facilities, burn units, bereavement support, at-risk youth programs and more.
About This Cause
Since 2012, Music Heals has raised awareness and funds to increase access to music therapy for vulnerable Canadians. Music Heals supports a wide range of music therapy services in communities in BC and across Canada. We increase access to music therapy for patients in children’s hospitals, seniors centres, palliative care, AIDS & HIV programs, at-risk youth, rehabilitation, and bereavement support. To date Music Heals has funded over 35,000 music therapy sessions that support a wide range of demographics which include premature infants in the NICU, children on the autism spectrum, youth at risk, adults recovering from addictions, those escaping abuse, and seniors struggling with dementia and Alzheimer's. What is Music Therapy? Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to help patients achieve a number of goals including improvement of communication, academic strengths, attention span, and motor skills. Music is used therapeutically to assist with behavioural therapy and pain management, as well as people who have physical, emotional, social, or cognitive deficits. Research in music therapy supports its effectiveness in many areas such as: overall physical rehabilitation and facilitating movement, increasing people's motivation to become engaged in their treatment, providing emotional support for clients and their families, and providing an outlet for expression of feelings.
