Mission Statement
Until The Last Child (UTLC) exists so that every child in Canada who needs a healthy, permanent home with a nurturing family gets one at the earliest opportunity. There are over 30,000 children in government care awaiting permanent homes across our country—yet as few as five percent of them find one each year. These children deserve better – we aim to change that.
About This Cause
Until The Last Child (UTLC) works alongside Child Welfare Agencies and other entities by supporting and funding innovation. We recently completed an Indigenous multi-stakeholder child welfare two-year pilot in partnership with the Government of Manitoba. The Pilot Project results were precedent setting in that 76% of children served in the pilot achieved permanency according to the Manitoba Definition of Permanency within the pilot’s two-year time frame, compared to the national average of only 5% finding homes each year. Children and youth in government care experience a range of unintended consequences: significantly higher rates of suicide, homelessness, incarceration, mental health and addiction issues, and poor graduation rates. We work in partnerships to help break this vicious cycle. We have a proven model that confirms kids in government care can find permanent loving homes within their community. Our national charity recently received the Royal Bank of Canada Social Finance Innovating for Youth Award, recognizing our work to address key gaps and challenges faced by youth in Canada. In addition, our organization was recently selected as an anchor partner in what will be the first large scale Child Welfare Social Impact Bond (SIB) agenda in Canada. Our reputation on these various projects including our successful 2014 child welfare pilot project in Guelph Ontario, speaks to our commitment to address these matters.
