Mission Statement
Our primary vision is that 2SLGBTQ+ people and MSM deserve optimal health care which takes into account the specific health and wellness needs of each individual. So, our mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of 2SLGBTQ+ people and MSM in Manitoba.
About This Cause
Our Own Health Centre is the expansion of the former Gay Men's Health Clinic which was started by Dr. Dick Smith. We have a long history of dedicated service to Gay, Bisexual, and other men who have sex with men and we now offer care to the entire 2SLGBTQ+ community. OOHC is a registered charity. We use charitable funds to pay for our daily operations, offer free counseling to our patients who cannot afford it, and buy expensive test kits so that we can offer free HIV testing to people at Pride and other events. Our Own Health Centre is a Winnipeg medical clinic that specializes in care for the 2SLGBTQ+ community. Our unique clinic is award-winning and nationally recognized for its work. Our Own Health Centre (OOHC) staff believe in holistic health care. In addition to Family Medicine, we offer sexual health care, mental health counseling, smoking/addiction programs, diabetes care, and financial counseling. Safety We maintain a space where patients will feel safe, comfortable, and free to openly discuss their health needs. Best-Practices We adhere to best and updated practices in everything we do. Respect We respect the diversity of our patients, without ageism, racism, classism, homophobia, or any other form of shaming. Inclusiveness Although we are a clinic for the 2SLGBTQ+ and MSM communities, we also commit to offer our services to all who seek care from us. We support all patients, and in particular, those who are most vulnerable. Patient-Centred Care We individualize care to each patient’s needs, with a focus on harm-reduction rather than risk-elimination. Holism Health and wellness is maintained by more than just medical care. We use an interdisciplinary approach, with different types of care providers, to support overall wellness. Integrity We subscribe to the highest ethical standards when working with our patients – this includes a commitment to confidentiality for patient information Independence As much as possible, we operate independent of government funding. Sound Governance We remain responsive to the wishes and needs of the clinicians and board with due diligence to protect our human, physical, and financial assets.
