Mission Statement

To improve understanding of human impacts on the environment through ecosystem-based research, to provide science-based solutions for clean water and health ecosystems, and to bolster science education and innovation.

About This Cause

IISD Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA) is the world’s whole-ecosystem living laboratory and the only one of its kind in the world, spanning 58 small lakes and their watersheds set aside for scientific research. For over 55 years, IISD-ELA has been a world leader in groundbreaking freshwater research and science. When you give to IISD-ELA, you help researchers conduct experiments on whole ecosystems, which yield much more accurate and complete results than standard experiments conducted at small scales in laboratories. The result of your donations: evidence-based strategies to combat threats to fresh water and the knowledge to help rewrite environmental policy in Canada and around the globe. Thanks to IISD-ELA’s research findings made possible by generous donors like you, we all benefit from air pollution regulations for reducing acid rain, hydroelectric reservoir design to minimize greenhouse gas fluxes and mercury contamination, proposed measures to lower mercury contamination in fish, and reduced algal blooms and water pollution. In addition, researchers at IISD-ELA have amassed one of the largest and most complete datasets in the world on long-term changes in small lakes, and our research activities are described in more than 1,000 peer-reviewed scientific publications. You can help prepare the world for a better freshwater future. Donate today. To learn more about our world-class research and science, visit our website at https://www.iisd.org/ela
