Mission Statement

We are a chorus of energetic women who sing 4-part a cappella harmony. Our members, whether musically trained or not, share a passion for singing. We are "ordinary voices making extraordinary music". We take a fresh and exciting approach to the a cappella singing of jazz, swing, modern classics, ballads and peppy uptunes. We've grown to over 60 members and always welcome new faces on the risers. We are 100% volunteer offering musical education in four part a cappella singing. We love to perform! We produce our own shows and sing in venues in and around Calgary- from concert halls to street corners- we've done it all. We enhance events held by other not for profits by injecting a large dose of musical energy. To hone our vocal skills we also participate in regional and international competitions once per year. We will be representing Western Canada at International Competition in 2017 in the US and are currently the top mid-sized chorus in Western Canada.

About This Cause

Rhythm of the Rockies began in 2002 with 7 ladies singing in a basement and has grown to over 60 members. It is the top women's 4 part a cappella chorus in Calgary, in Alberta and #1 for it's size in Western Canada. Rhythm of the Rockies objective is to perpetuate and enhance four part harmony singing thereby benefiting local communities by furthering their artistic enrichment. We offer the public the opportunity for education and high level voice training and then share the amazing result at events in and around Calgary. Our volunteer membership team recruits new singers through word of mouth, chorus visibility in the community through performances and advertising. While some of our members have had musical training, the majority come to Rhythm of the Rockies as women with an interest in singing and a desire to increase their knowledge as well as becoming a member of an exciting organization. We welcome all ages, races and musical skill levels. Integration into the group is of primary importance aided by members being assigned a riser buddy which then develops into an ongoing camaraderie among members. Our members meet weekly for a 3 hour session in a rehearsal hall. The hall must be large enough to accommodate our membership, our risers and sound equipment. Our musical repertoire is selected by our Director and the music team who look at the long term plan for our musical education. During rehearsal, instruction in music, voice and performance skills is offered. Coaches are brought in on a regular basis to enhance training with coaching levels increasing as the group progresses. Learning happens at different rates for each member and the art of increasing our skills as new members are introduced is a constant balance in order to benefit everyone and establish a safe and comfortable learning environment. In addition to music, our members have the opportunity to learn the skills of leadership within a not for profit organization. Whether serving on the management team, music team or offering their help with fundraising or show production, each member plays an important part in the operations of the chorus. This added responsibility as a chorus member results in increased self esteem as they enjoy their art form while learning new skills. Our marketing teams works with community organizations to facilitate performances events. Our attendance at these events offers our group added exposure and increases the fundraising and promotion of host event. In conjunction with the music team, wardrobe team and creative group, performances lasting from 15 minutes to 2 hour productions showcase the skills of our members when shared with audiences. Though we learn and perform as volunteers we pride ourselves on offering a polished and entertaining product to audiences. We have hosted regional schools and symposiums to further musical training and recently held A cappella Christmas allowing guests to train with us for 3 months and be a part of our Christmas show. We welcomed a director from another Calgary chorus to sing with us for a year in order to improve her skills. She is now sharing her newly found talents with 60 other singers who will broaden their own skills. We are chartered members of Sweet Adelines International - we receive no funding from this organization. Geographically, there are more than 500 Sweet Adelines chapter choruses located on 5 continents, in 15 nations and with over 23,000 singers involved. Sweet Adelines promotes harmony, friendship, self-esteem and the sense of belonging among women of all ages, races, ethnic background and levels of performance readiness. As a member of this international organization, Rhythm of the Rockies participates in regional competition annually and also qualified for international competition in 2013 (1st in the world in our mid-size range), and in 2015. In October, 2017 we will once again be representing Canada as 1 of 34 choruses on the International stage based on our strong regional scoring. These annual contests confirm that the standard of our voice and performance training is world class. We have been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall on 2 occasions but the task of getting 65 singers there has proved too expensive ......... for now. As our organization continues to educate our members and the general public in the art of harmonized, a cappella singing, we hope to broaden the enjoyment and understanding of this art form.
