Mission Statement
We make caregiving easier with music. We produce and deliver music care programs in 3 areas: 1. MUSIC CARE CONNECT – a streaming app with more than 800 purposely designed songs, videos and activities for customizable, person-centred programming 2. MUSIC CARE LEARN - a hub of learning programs and resources for deeper understanding and application of music for care meant to strengthen caregiver confidence to use music 3. MUSIC CARE CERTIFY - a quality improvement program that raises the standard of music care delivery.
About This Cause
In Canada and other parts of the world, there is an increasing interest in the relationship between music, health, well-being and how it can be used in care contexts. This may be because music is an intricate part of life passage and has tremendous healing capacity. One life passage where the depth and breadth of music is profound is at the end of life. It was in room 217, at a small rural hospital in Ontario, where Bev Foster, said goodnight to her Dad for the last time. She and her family experienced music’s unique ability to accompany them through his end-of-life journey. In 2009, Bev and her husband Rob founded the Room 217 Foundation, a not-for-profit corporation and registered Canadian charity dedicated to care through music. The Room 217 Foundation is a music-based health arts social enterprise. Our newly branded MUSIC CARE by Room 217 produces and delivers purposely designed music products, education, training, and certification to improve quality of life and care. Our three pillars of MUSIC CARE are - CONNECT, LEARN and CERTIFY – each designed to support caregivers and care communities to increase engagement and life enrichment. We have developed a unique, cost-effective approach to care called music care. Music care is the intentional use of music by anyone to improve health and well-being for self and others. This approach promotes the application of sound and music to be used in formal health care settings and community or home-based contexts to achieve positive healthcare outcomes. Our programs and resources meet current health priorities of person-centred care and non-pharmacological interventions and are accessible for anyone to use and learn to integrate. Music is integral to person-centred care through integration into daily routines and practice. Music care is inclusive, offering a variety of delivery domains and a means for both intercultural and intergenerational connection. Music care can be implemented by all caregivers regardless of music ability. The intentional use of music humanizes care, deepens relationships, and enhances the care experience. As an umbrella organization, MUSIC CARE by Room 217 connects people with common interests and connects people to resources. It inspires, educates, and innovates. With national and international reach, we are passionate and entrepreneurial, with a credible brand in certain health care sectors like hospice palliative care, adult day programs, and senior living (i.e., long-term care, assisted living.) MUSIC CARE by Room 217’s multi-modal model meets a high standard of care, and provides a range of music applications and expertise that is relevant for larger populations, easily crossing cultures and sectors. We reach diverse stakeholders and affiliates in social, educational, and medical domains and provides a hub for networking and connecting multi-disciplinary caregivers. MUSIC CARE by Room 217 currently reaches a number of care and educational settings such as palliative and end- of-life care, long term care, dementia care, persons aging in place, colleges, universities, and orchestras. students and musicians. Stakeholders who engage in our offerings include recreational therapists and other activity professionals, personal support workers, nurses, social workers, chaplains, volunteer and family caregivers, educators, students and musicians.
