Mission Statement

Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (home of Kawartha Turtle Trauma Centre) is a registered charity whose goal is to protect and conserve Ontario’s native turtles and the habitat in which they live. We accomplish this by operating a turtle hospital that treats, rehabilitates, and releases injured turtles, by performing extensive research in the field to further conservation initiatives, and by running a comprehensive education and outreach program.

About This Cause

Hospital: Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre (OTCC) operates a teaching hospital that treats Ontario's native turtle species with ground-breaking medical treatment and care. Our volunteer "Turtle Taxi" team members relay turtles to our facility from all over the province. Hatchling Program: We harvest and incubate eggs from injured females or eggs brought into the centre. After the eggs hatch, turtles are kept for a short period of time before being released into their mother’s wetland. By Fall, OTCC has 1000+ hatchlings ready for release. Head Start Program: By raising Species at Risk hatchlings an additional year or more in our facility, their chances of survival increase substantially once released and returned to their wetlands. OTCC conducts field studies and research in high-priority areas on released hatchlings, This data is shared with turtle biologists, government ministries and agencies, academics and other conservation organizations. Education Program: OTCC has an outreach and education program which plays a vital role in engaging people of all ages in conservation and in support of our work. We have three comprehensive packages tailored to meet the requirements of any group: at our location in the Peterborough area, offsite at any facility, and we also Skype.
