About This Cause

A Beacon of Empowerment for Young Leaders in Emergency Services Camp Courage, The First Responder's Society, proudly reaffirms its unwavering commitment to inspire and empower young females and gender-diverse youth to embark on careers and leadership roles in the field of emergency services. As a registered charity since 2006, Camp Courage has steadfastly adhered to its mission of informing, educating, and uplifting our future leaders. Empowering Tomorrow's Heroes Despite comprising over 50% of the population, females' representation in emergency services is alarmingly low—just 11% in firefighting, 23% in police officers, and 40% in paramedics. Camp Courage aims to close this gap by offering a comprehensive, cost-free program, equipping individuals aged 15 to 19 with essential knowledge and skills for success in emergency services. Holistic Learning Environment Camp Courage takes pride in providing diverse experiential learning within nurturing environments. Participants engage in hands-on activities, including self-defense, crime scene investigation, police service dog and horse training, CPR, airway and intravenous line insertion, simulated childbirth, vehicle extrication, ladder climbing, and fire extinguishing. Guest speakers and fitness professionals inspire participants to reach their full potential. The graduates of Camp Courage can apply for high school credit, first-aid and CPR courses, life skills workshops, educational bursaries, and our post-camp mentorship program. The mentorship program focuses on preparing and supporting graduates for the intensive application processes required for employment in the emergency services, specifically preparing for aptitude tests, fitness tests, and interviews. Empowering Future Leaders Camp Courage's unique application process focuses on community impact. Applicants submit plans for improving their community or someone else's life, along with two letters of recommendation. Selected participants turn ideas into actions, contributing to meaningful causes and making a positive impact. The impact is undeniable—36% of graduates are actively involved in emergency services. Some win bursaries, top student honors, community awards, assume leadership roles, and become change-makers. Many become camp mentors, board members, and help start new camps. National and International Expansion With established camps in Alberta, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, and the remarkably successful specialty expansion of Camp Courage Indigenous, the organization's unwavering commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and nurturing future leaders is not only evident on a national level but also poised for international recognition. Investing in Youth for a Better Tomorrow Camp Courage is not just about empowering our youth, instilling greater confidence, and broadening employment horizons; it's also about promoting essential values, enhancing our emergency services, and fostering stronger communities. We firmly believe that investing in our youth is one of the most pivotal actions we can take to ensure a brighter future. About Camp Courage Camp Courage, The First Responder's Society, is a registered charity steadfastly dedicated to inspiring young females and gender-diverse youth to pursue careers and leadership roles in emergency services. Since its inception in 2006, Camp Courage has been delivering award-winning programs that empower future leaders and enrich our communities.
