Mission Statement
The DTES Neighbourhood House is a secular, grassroots, place based organization that provides social/recreational programming for all ages. We offer a welcoming space inclusive of all. We build community assets for communal benefit. The Mandate of the DTES Neighbourhood House is to provide programming, and educational, leadership, social and recreational opportunities to residents of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. The mission of the house is to provide opportunities for residents to meaningfully engage with and contribute to their community in an equitable atmosphere of sharing and learning.
About This Cause
Incorporated in June 2009, the mission of the DTES Neighbourhood House is to foster a respectful, equitable atmosphere of sharing and learning by providing opportunities for residents to meaningfully engage with, and contribute to their community. We do this through community development and by a grassroots community building approach, addressing local concerns. We are neighbourhood based and open and inclusive of all; multigenerational and multicultural. Our programs ensure a welcoming neighbourhood facility that the community feels ownership of. We develop programs that build on the strengths and assets of the community and for communal benefit. We develop strong partnerships with other groups and organizations to build programming that addresses the needs, desires and deservedness of community members. Our mandate is to provide educational, leadership, social and recreational opportunities to residents of all ages, ancestries and descriptions in Vancouver's DTES. Our vision is to achieve an improved quality of life for all DTES residents, with particular allegiance to those most socially and economically vulnerable. Through a variety of social and recreational programs including community drop ins, family programming, community kitchens and gardens, workshop opportunities and social events, we create a safe, supportive environment for community members to engage and connect with one another and issues that are important to their well-being. We reduce social isolation and provide opportunities for volunteer engagement across all socio-economic stratas.
