Mission Statement
Studio 180 Theatre’s mission is to engage, provoke and entertain through dynamic theatre and innovative Beyond The Stage experiences that delve into social and political issues. Our vision is to engage people more fully in the world through the experience of live theatre.
About This Cause
“One of the most reliably interesting and challenging theatre companies in town.” TORONTO STAR Studio 180 Theatre began in March of 2002, when its five co-founders came together, launching less than a year later with the acclaimed Canadian premiere of The Laramie Project (2003). Since then, we have evolved from an informal artistic collective into one of Toronto’s most respected independent professional theatre companies and in 2008, we were named Toronto’s “Best Indie Theatre Company” by Now Magazine. We produce plays — often Canadian or North American premieres of renowned international works — that tackle difficult issues and generate powerful audience responses. Starting in 2008/09, we have produced up to two large-scale shows per season in our Mainstage Series. Our Studio Series consists of workshops and public play readings from our Studio 180 READS and Studio 180 IN DEVELOPMENT programs, where we are proud to support the development of new Canadian plays that explore provocative social and political issues. Beyond The Stage activities enhance each Mainstage production with opportunities to learn from industry leaders and participate in public dialogue. Between 2008/09 and 2011/12, we were founding partners of the Berkeley Street Project, producing one show annually as part of the Canadian Stage subscriber season. In 2012/13, we also helped launch OFF-MIRVISH: The Second Stage Series in partnership with Mirvish Productions, participating for six seasons and consistently breaking our own record for highest ticket sales of a dramatic play at the CAA Theatre. We have also developed Studio 180 IN CLASS, an innovative education program that takes our work into high school classrooms. The program has now expanded to include almost 2,000 students from across the Greater Toronto Area, learning through production and topic based workshops delivered by our team of Artist Educators.
