The Independent Media Producers Network Society (doing business as MediaNet) is a non-profit organization that provides access to specialized video equipment and post-production tools, helping artists create independent video and media art, as well as providing learning opportunities and exhibitions of media art in our FLUX media gallery.

About This Cause

MediaNet Annual Report 2017-2018 The Independent Media Producers Network Society (doing business as MediaNet) serves artists and the public in the Greater Victoria region, on the ancestral territory of the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations and also the W'asanec speaking peoples of the Pauquachin, Tsartlip, Tseycum and Tsawout First Nations. All of MediaNet's activities flow directly from our purposes. Here are MediaNet's purposes as outlined in our constitution, followed by descriptions of related activities: Purpose 1: "To preserve and promote the practice of the media arts in Greater Victoria and Vancouver Island and maintain high standards in that artistic field, by making available to artists the specialized tools or facilities needed to practice their craft." - We offer the public access to specialized video equipment, for example: cameras, tripods, lights, microphones, and other assorted accessories to the equipment. This on-going, daily service meets our mandate to provide specialized equipment to assist media artists to practice their craft. People pay very small fees, to help cover maintenance costs for the equipment. We also offer technical support, and free access to computers on site for editing video. Finally, we provide working space and tools in our Flux Media Art Gallery for the creation of artists’ works. Purpose 2: "To advance education by providing structured learning activities such as courses, instructional seminars, and workshops about media arts." - We regularly offer workshops open to the public, teaching people how to use the specialized video equipment. In order to provide a variety of training opportunities, we offer individual mentoring, in addition to courses that are structured as production programs, leading to the creation of new work. Based on our experience we follow a teaching philosophy that people learn best while making something. Purpose 3: "To advance the public’s appreciation of the arts by producing public art exhibitions, presentations, and art events, and by providing a forum for qualified artists to exhibit, present, or perform their artistic works through participation in such events." - Our FLUX Media Art Gallery gives us a multi-purpose space to exhibit media art in a variety of fashions, from video or film installations, to single evening projection screenings. Over the past two years we have presented media art works by artists such as the acclaimed Terry Haines, local artists, such as Tina Pearson and Yoko Takashima, as well as film artist Alex MacKenzie, from Vancouver. FLUX also provides us a space for artists talks, which meets both our presentation and educational mandates. We present several screening series, Cinema Salon for art films, and Open Cinema for documentaries, contributing to our mandate to exhibit media art. We offer opportunities for community members to engage in critical dialogue at the Flux Media Art Gallery, through symposiums, (such as our ReFrame Film Symposium, and upcoming Digital Art Symposium), which help the viewing public to explore important issues in the media arts. Our print and on-line publications (InFlux Magazine) contribute to the advancement of the public's appreciation of media art, and Cinema Salon features discussions about the films we screen. We present special screenings and workshops with talks by artists or curators, for example last fall's screening of women's films from Montreal, curated by Lysanne Thibodeau, or Patrick Jenkins' talk and workshop on animation techniques.
