About This Cause

HEAL International (Health, Education and Leadership) is an Edmonton-based, non-denominational organization responding to local priorities in Uganda. HEAL is involved in several projects which build on strengths and provide opportunities through education, health initiatives and leadership development. HEAL International works with communities in Uganda and assist them to build a stronger and healthier future by supporting education projects, improving health, and encouraging potential leadership in their community. By working with local groups that are established, trusted and respected in the community, HEAL International is able to provide relevant services and support to those who have the greatest needs. Our charity supports six key activities. First, we support orphaned and vulnerable children who would otherwise be unable to attend school due to the impact of poverty and HIV/AIDS. Through sponsorship funding, we enable students to access the resources and supports needed to attend primary and secondary schools in their own communities. Second, we support children with special health needs to access health, education, nutrition and psychosocial support through a rescue home located in western Uganda. Third, we facilitate partnerships between rural Ugandan schools and Canadian schools. This partnership strives to improve education in rural communities through the support of schools in the form of text books and equipment. The partnership also helps develop an ethic of global citizenship, leadership, and volunteerism in Canadian youth. Fourth, we provide a variety of scholarships for promising students to pursue higher education and vocational training. Fifth, we support the Peer Education Kabarole program to enable secondary school students to access important information on reproductive and sexual health to ensure that they remain healthy and able to stay in school. Finally, we support local communities to construct new schools in underserved area through community partnerships that promote local priorities and local ownership.
