About This Cause

Career Trek is a Manitoba-based not-for-profit serving Winnipeg, Brandon, Thompson, The Pas and many Indigenous Communities throughout the province. We work with children and youth that are most likely to encounter disproportionate barriers to employment, education, justice, and social participation as they grow. Our participants often identify as Newcomers, Indigenous, or from a racialized community; they tend to live in disadvantaged neighbourhoods or are connected to the foster care system. By supporting their career development, we’re helping them break the cycle of oppression and work towards achieving their dreams. Our programs operate in a similar way: we provide hands-on exposure to a variety of in-demand careers while building a foundation of employability skills. Participants use tools of the trade to perform tasks and solve problems that they would encounter in real-world settings. We tailor our offerings to the needs and opportunities in the region where they live and feature a variety of employment sectors that drive the Manitoba economy such as trades, STEM, health, hospitality, and business. After each career exploration, we guide participants through reflection exercises to help them articulate and gain insight into the type of work they enjoy, and what interests them about different industries. We also show participants a Career Roadmap to explain how their current school learning connects to these career paths. We work with vocational schools, university and college campuses, and industry partners, and base our programs on-site in their spaces. Exposure to a variety of environments helps demystify the future, build a sense of belonging, and makes it easier for participants to see themselves working and learning in these settings later. The benefit of early career exploration is profound. In long-term follow-up, 89% of Career Trek participants graduate high school (provincial average is 79.9%) and 92% have received a degree, diploma, or certificate. Career Trek’s Vision: Inspiring life-long learning today, for a just and equitable tomorrow.
