Mission Statement
The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation saves lives by preventing skin cancer. We promote sun protection and early detection through public campaigns, educational messaging, and our unique in-school program for children and youth across Canada.
About This Cause
The Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation (CSCF) is a community-based and community-driven charity that relies on volunteers. Skin Cancer is Preventable Our Vision - A world without skin cancer. Our Mission – To prevent and eradicate skin cancer through education, awareness, advocacy and research. What We Do – Prevent future skin cancers with our Sun Safety Education Program. Over the last 20 years, CSCF has educated thousands of children and youth across Canada. Our Sun Safety Education Program uniquely engages student volunteers with grades 4,5, 6, and 7 students. University and college students in related health fields are trained to deliver sun safety presentations to elementary school students, increasing awareness and knowledge of skin cancer prevention among both groups. The presentations are delivered online across Canada in partnership with volunteers from Universities and Colleges, primarily students from health fields. Presenters explore scientific information about skin cancers, prevention techniques, the ABCDEs of early detection and the dangers of artificial tanning. Developed for children in grades 4, 5, 6 & 7, we aim to change future attitudes and behaviours related to skin cancer awareness and sun safety. Scientific studies have proven that early education regarding sun safety has decreased the number of sunburns in children, positively impacting future decisions concerning sun safety. CSCF knows through feedback and outputs that the presentations made a difference. After a recent survey of participating teachers, 95% said they would book the presentation again the following year, and 99% would recommend it to a colleague. CSCF needs more resources to support the increasing number of class presentation requests. With your support, we can expand the number of children who have increased Sun Safety awareness and ultimately prevent future skin cancers.
