Mission Statement
The Handi-Boat Society of Alberta is a ‘Not for Profit’ organization dedicated to providing a unique and alternative recreational opportunity for for people with disabilities, the disadvantaged and senior members of our Society.
About This Cause
The Handi-Boat Society of Alberta is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors and is a federally registered charity with Registered Charity Number 87008 6931 RR0001. The Society relies solely on volunteers and has no paid employees. The Handi-Boat, named the Santa Maria II, is a custom-built motorized pontoon watercraft that carries up to 18 guests, eight of which can be in wheelchairs. It is operated by a qualified staff of three volunteers. The service is offered to hospitals, extended and long-term care nursing homes, group homes, hospice groups, children in need, and disabled and seniors' organizations. Handi-Boat excursions are extended to residents mainly in the Calgary and surrounding area. In addition to Calgary, our guests have come from Lethbridge, Cochrane, Airdrie, Olds and Didsbury. Excursions are conducted at the Ghost Lake Reservoir. The Handi-Boat Society was formed in June 1997 and has been in operation since June 1998. Since then, almost ten thousand people, ranging in age from seven to 97, have made use of our service. One of our better years was in 2008 when we sailed 41 times with 640 passengers, 69 of which were in wheelchairs.
