Mission Statement
Furniture Bank is a socially progressive organization that provides our clients with the comfort, dignity and stability that comes from having a furnished home. We create opportunities through the transfer of furniture from our donors to our clients. Furniture Bank sets out to tackle furniture poverty through our social and environmental interrelated programs to address a range of Toronto's core challenges. We believe a house is not a home without furniture. And everyone deserves the comfort, dignity and security of a furnished home.
About This Cause
Furniture Bank began in 1998 with the belief that a sense of pride, comfort, and security – in short, a sense of home – are critical ingredients for people to transition out of lives of homelessness and displacement. Recognizing the importance of furniture in establishing a true home, and empowering those who live inside, Furniture Bank transfers gently used furniture donations from the community to over 10,000 people annually, who are transitioning out of homelessness, new to Canada, or women and children escaping abusive situations. As a Social Purpose Enterprise with a goal to both serve our clients and further help to prevent more people from re-experiencing displacement, we also offer an employment and skills-training program: Leg Up. Leg Up is designed to help individuals who face barriers to employment re-enter the workforce, through employment in all areas of the organization. We train 25-30 participants annually, fostering personal and professional growth via job skills, emotional intelligence training, financial literacy and much more. Our goal is to to extend an empathetic environment, while helping participants acquire the skills they need to find meaningful, long-term employment. While we are able to save 90% of the furniture we receive, the other 10% needs to be repaired or repurposed. The Repair Workshop is one of the Leg Up social enterprises that rescues, repairs, and refurbishes donated home furnishings for repurposing into the Home Furnishing Essentials Program.
