Mission Statement
Community Music Schools of Toronto (formerly Regent Park School of Music) is a charitable organization that provides children and youth in need, living in priority neighbourhoods across Toronto, a quality music education, instruments and once-in-a-lifetime performance opportunities in a safe, creative and nurturing environment.
About This Cause
Our goal at Community Music Schools of Toronto is two-fold: to give young people in need a quality music education and to address some of the social needs that come as part and parcel of their circumstances. Inspiring, engaging and giving our students a sense of belonging, choice and accomplishment is foremost in the minds of our 40 music faculty working across Toronto. We offer the kids who live in very challenging financial circumstances after-school, daytime, weekend, March Break and summer music camps. Unlike any other community music school in the city, we offer a mix of private, group, ensemble and larger group music lessons and give the kids once-in-a-lifetime performance opportunities to boost their confidence and belief in themselves. We give kids access to music programs that range from classical piano, strings, brass, wind, voice and percussion to sound engineering, song writing and composition using digital and electronic instruments. Our model and philosophy is not a ‘one size fits all’ but rather one that is driven by the kids’ interests, social situation and needs. Over the years we have expanded our music programs, experimenting all the while, to ensure that we keep the kids engaged and that our menu of offerings is current, inspiring, and relevant to the various ages and backgrounds of the kids. As a result we have an 80% retention rate year over year. The accomplishments of Community Music Schools of Toronto are numerous, but our greatest pride is in our kids. Year after year we watch them thrive through music, make new friends and help change the face and nature of the community. In the past seven years, all our graduating high school students have gone on to either college or university, improving their future prospects and earning potential and breaking the cycle of poverty in their community. As a school we are most proud of our twenty year-long good standing in Regent Park and our growing slate of offerings which include: multiple music programs in Jane-Finch which reach over 250 kids, our work with kids in the First Nations School of Toronto and smaller pilot music programs for children living in refugee shelters, aboriginal street youth, and youth in the youth justice system who have had a brush with the law.
