Mission Statement

One in three children is growing up unable to read or write. Amarok teaches mothers to teach children and transform neighbourhoods.

About This Cause

What do you do in lands where there is no money to build schools for millions of uneducated children? Amarok Society brings a revolutionary solution to a chronic humanitarian problem. Amarok Society teaches groups of 25 illiterate mothers in the slums of Bangladesh to read and write. These mothers, in turn, become neighbourhood teachers to children with no opportunity for education. Each mother teaches 5 children in their hutment. The results are astonishing as lives change rapidly for the better through education. Amarok Society turns illiterate mothers into catalysts of profound change for their families and for their neighbourhoods. Each mother teaches 5 girls and boys in her 'micro'school' The children all teach younger siblings, parents, and/or friends. These mothers, once disdained by others, are now sought out for advice and help, which they give freely to others. Working from the centre of the family outward the ripples of education affect everyone in the neighbourhood, giving children brighter futures, supporting other mothers, youth and families. Where there was despair, there is now hope. Amarok Society is more than just an international charity: it’s actually an international coalition of devoted supporters and courageous women who, everyday, defy the immediate threats of prejudice, intolerance and extremism in order to learn and then teach the children of their communities, and, subsequently, deny extremists the unreasoning support and blind obedience absolutely necessary to their success.
