About This Cause

The Military Museums Foundation is a registered charitable Foundation which brings Canadian military heritage to life for Canadian students. The Foundation's mandate is to provide curriculum-based education programs, tours and presentations. The Foundation's basis is that through Education, Remembrance becomes a legacy which is preserved. The Foundation's main programming , which is delivered on-site at The Military Museums, consists of planning, developing and delivering military heritage education to students from kindergarten to grades 12. Participants in our programs are diverse, and attend from schools around Western Canada. Our education program attendees also include post-secondary scholars, the general public, special needs groups, retired and serving Canadian Armed Forces members. Additionally, the Foundation delivers special programs to a range of youth groups and organizations such as Scouts, Beavers, Brownies and Girl Guides. We regularly host programs for Cadets from all three branches of the Canadian Forces. The Foundation offers up to 30 programs, presentations and tours to schools, community groups, service organizations and visitors. Our education packages each contain two to three programs made up of interactive activities. Each package is designed to hit specific curriculum points in relation to specific grade levels. This provides a more curriculum-focused approach to learning. Our programs teach students about nearly all of Canada's rich military history. Our programs include these subjects: Shaping our Nation: the War of 1812; Canada and the Great War (Canada's Victory at Vimy Ridge); Passages of Vimy; Newfoundland at the Somme; Artifact Handling; Meet a Veteran; Indigenous Perspectives; Boats, Bells and Banners; Canada's Indigenous Veterans; Operation Overlord - Briefing Room; Marching Drill and Uniform Try-on; Women in War; Explosive Threats; Send and Receive (Morse Code); Time to Explore; and Origins and Voices of Remembrance. The Foundation offers special focus days and Home School Days, as well as Outreach visits to schools. Our Educators work with teachers individually to ensure that their program selections meet their course requirements. By educating students, we are able to share knowledge on Canada's military history to their parents, families and community members. Our programs are available to community organizations and residents to help them better understand our history. By interacting with volunteers with a military background, community members are able to connect with Canada's past in order to understand the present. The Foundation operates within the Military Museums in Calgary, Alberta which receives over 55,000 visitors annually. The Museums represent three military services (army, navy and airforce) in its multi-gallery facility. It includes regimental galleries including those for PPCLI, King's Own Calgary Regiment, Lord Strathcona's Horse and the Calgary Highlanders. As well, the University of Calgary operates a Founder's Art Gallery which exhibits art related to military history, as well as a military history library and archives. Overall, it is the largest military heritage museum in Western Canada, and the second largest military museum in Canada. Remembrance Day and Veterans Week at the Museums attracts up to 12,000 people each year, and several thousand at each of its Family Day, Canada Day, Summer Skirmish and other public programs. The Foundation also hosts summer camps for students, birthday parties and adult programming. Summer programs are held outdoors on the Museums' spacious grounds, and have a military theme as do the birthday parties. The Military Museums Foundation is continually improving its programs and introducing new ones each year. In 2018, the Foundation will be developing new school and summer programs to commemorate the Centennial of the Armistice. Students engaged in our programs, presentations and tours come away with a better understanding of Canada as a democracy and a nation. Please help deliver military history programs to Canada's youth by donating to the Military Museums Foundation. Sponsorship of military education programs ensures that Canada's military history and heritage is not forgotten. It is through Education, that Remembrance is learned. REMEMBER PRESERVE EDUCATE
