Mission Statement
Our mission is to serve disadvantaged Tibetan children, men and women in India, Nepal and Tibet, and to increase public awareness and appreciation of Tibetan culture. Notre mission consiste, d'une part, à aider les Tibétains, enfants et adultes, expatriés en Inde, au Népal et au Tibet et, d'autre part, à sensibiliser les Canadiens à la culture et aux traditions tibétaines.
About This Cause
Who we are and what we do The Ottawa Friends of Tibet (OFT) was founded in 1996 by Jurme and Angela Wangda and a small group of committed volunteers as a non-political organization dedicated to improving the health, education and economic conditions of Tibetans and Tibetan refugees in India and elsewhere. In 2001, OFT became a federally registered charity. Our Objectives are to carry out and support programs that aid communities in Tibet and Tibetan refugees around the world by: - providing basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter to those in dire need; - providing medical care to those in need and carrying out preventative health care programs; and - awarding scholarships and grants to persons residing in such communities to support education and professional training. Current projects include: - Supporting Nhenang Pawo Monastery in Nepal. - Scholarships for college and university education of Tibetan students with financial needs. - In co-operation with Child Haven International, funding for the Maitreya Home, now a hostel for Tibetan refugee students attending high school and university in Delhi, India, and scholarships for students living in Tibet. - Partnership with the Chyssem Project which is a grassroots community effort to create a permanent archival record about the first Tibetans who arrived in Canada in the early 1970s. Completed project: In 2014, the Tara Mandala Seniors’ Home Project in Kalimpong India, was completed. Now 50 destitute Tibetan elders have a permanent home there. It took 12 years for OFT to raise the $200,000 for construction. This was a huge accomplishment for a small NGO. Qui nous sommes et ce que nous faisons Les Amis du Tibet à Ottawa (LATO) est une organisation non politique fondée en 1996 par Jurme et Angela Wangda, ainsi qu’un petit groupe de bénévoles dévoués, qui se consacre à l’amélioration de la santé, de l’éducation et des conditions économiques des Tibétains et des réfugiés tibétains en Inde et ailleurs. En 2001, LATO est devenue une oeuvre caritative enregistrée au niveau fédéral. Nos objectifs sont de mettre en œuvre et soutenir des projets qui aident les communautés au Tibet et les Tibétains expatriés en fournissant : - des produits de première nécessité, comme la nourriture, les vêtements et un abri aux démunis; - des soins médicaux et des programmes de santé préventifs; - des bourses d'études et des prêts pour soutenir la formation professionnelle et l'éducation. Nos projets en cours incluent : - un soutien au monastère Nhenang Pawo Monastery au Népal. - des bourses d’études pour étudiants d’école secondaire et post-secondaire au Tibet ayant besoin de soutien financier. - un soutien financier avec la coopération de Child Haven International pour le foyer Maitreya pour étudiants Tibétains réfugiés ayant à l'école secondaire et à l'université à New Delhi en Inde et des bourses d'études pour étudiants habitant au Tibet. - un partenariat avec le projet Chyssem qui est un effort communautaire visant à créer un dossier d'archives permanent sur les premiers tibétains arrivés au Canada au début des années 1970. Projet complété : En 2014 le projet pour la construction du foyer Tara Mandala pour aînés à Kalimpong en Inde a été réalisé. En date d’aujourd’hui, 50 Tibétains âgés et démunis ont un foyer permanent. LATO a amassé une somme de 200 000 $ en 12 ans pour cette construction. Il s’agit là d’une réalisation importante pour une ONG de si petite taille.
