About This Cause

Ecologos/Water Docs is a 25-year innovative organization situated at the intersection of environmental education, engagement, and advocacy. Our unique approach diverges from traditional fear-based messaging, instead focusing on inspiring awe and fostering a profound connection to nature. Our primary mission revolves around safeguarding water, nurturing climate resilience, and fostering sustainable practices for a viable future. This multi-faceted ethos drives our endeavors and sets us apart as a smaller, yet dynamic, organization committed to driving meaningful change. We are characterized by our agility, grassroots engagement, and focus on forging connections within communities. Our size enables us to swiftly adapt to changing circumstances, fostering an atmosphere of inclusivity and cooperation. Since our inception in 1998, we have embarked on a range of projects that seamlessly intertwine education, experiential learning, and artistic expression, all of which resonate profoundly with diverse audiences. The cornerstone of our work is the Water Docs Film Festival, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2021. This annual event has been instrumental in amplifying the voices of filmmakers, experts, and community members, facilitating dialogues on water and climate concerns. The Film Festival and affiliated Water Docs Where You Live Community Screening program is a testament to our commitment to driving conversations and actions addressing pressing water and climate challenges. A significant milestone of the Water Docs Film Festival is the annual Water Warrior Award, initiated in 2018 on World Water Day. This prestigious award is presented at the Water Docs Film Festival and bestowed upon individuals who have made outstanding contributions to protecting and raising awareness about threats and issues facing water and climate. It reflects our commitment to restoring the human connection to water and our climate, motivating concrete actions for their protection. Furthermore, our collaboration with local artist Aurora Darwin underscores our belief in the transformative power of art. Aurora's glass wave sculpture, designed as our Water Warrior Award, symbolizes the ability of art to inspire action for water conservation and climate protection. Launched in collaboration with Learning for a Sustainable Future, our Water Docs at School Program is a transformative initiative that spans eight months of the grade 7 & 8 public school system’s curriculum and is offered provincially. Through an immersive curriculum and hands-on projects, students hone their leadership, teamwork, and filmmaking skills while cultivating a deep bond with their local environment. Over the years, our organization has achieved significant success. We helped to halt the establishment of North America's second-largest open pit gravel mine in 2017, organized impactful symposiums, and engaged thousands in social media campaigns. Other initiatives have included The Water Journey, a forum that reconnects individuals with their personal affinity for water, and Pedal Power, an interactive installation that visualizes water's energy cost. We continue to encourage collective action through initiatives like the #ActionForWater campaign promoting small yet meaningful changes in daily practices to contribute to the broader movement for water and climate preservation. Our commitment to action-driven engagement has resulted in lasting partnerships and a growing network of community supporters. Our efforts are enriched through collaboration with community partners such as DRAWDOWN Toronto, the Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival, the Blue Mountain Watershed Trust, and Great Lakes Commons, among others.
