Mission Statement
LongRun believes that thoroughbred racehorses deserve a dignified and safe retirement. Our mission is to offer an alternative to owners and trainers with horses who are no longer competitive at the track by fostering, rehabilitating and finding these horses permanent adoptive homes and possibly new careers as pleasure mounts or companion animals. We also strive to educate racing fans and the general public about the merits of our program and the history, attributes and flexibility of the magnificent thoroughbred
About This Cause
LongRun is one of the first adoption and placement programs for thoroughbred racehorses in Canada. The concept of a not-for-profit organization dedicated to rehabilitating, retraining and rehoming thoroughbreds had been discussed among Ontario’s racing community for a number of years. In 1999, the founding members of LongRun came together to make this idea a reality by establishing LongRun and successfully applying for registered charitable status. It all started with a horse named Up Pops the Devil and since then, LongRun has successfully placed many hundreds of horses into loving, adoptive homes while providing permanent sanctuary for other deserving retirees. For over 15 years, LongRun has fulfilled its mandate to provide Ontario’s deserving ex-racehorses with a dignified retirement through the support of multiple foster farms. In 2015, we received a most generous bequest from the late Lana Hershelle Sniderman, who was an avid lover of thoroughbreds and had placed her retirees through our program. Her gift enabled LongRun to fulfill its long-term goal of purchasing a central facility allowing us to consolidate most of our 50 plus horses in one location, which should prove to be more convenient for viewing by potential adopters and which will allow us to expand our equine assisted therapy programs.
