Mission Statement

Grandview Calvary Baptist Church is a community of people who receive and extend the radical welcome of God in Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit for the transformation of ourselves and our neighbourhood.

About This Cause

Grandview is a community of people who journey together as followers of Jesus. We continue Christ's work in the world with a lot of heart. Though we often fail to live as a sign to what the Kingdom of God is like, we keep planting seeds, trusting the Spirit to grow us and grow our work in the world. Our community is congregational in its structure, which means that every person is responsible for the mission and the shared life of our community. This requires us to be a community marked by the grace of God. We need grace from one another regularly and give it just as often. Even as we encourage and challenge one another to go deeper into the life of Christ, we offer trust to one another, knowing that God is at work in each of us. We see ourselves as bridge builders among the larger people of God and also within our places of work, leisure, and relationship. We are committed to one another in all our diversity, we are committed to the good of our city—particularly the Grandview-Woodlands neighbourhood—and we are committed to our own spiritual growth. This involves a lot of joy and pain. In a variety of ways, we are in solidarity with the marginalized, we find fresh expression of ancient traditions, we love and care for God’s creation, and much more. We remain committed to these things because we believe they are our Creator’s purpose for us, because we have become disciples of Jesus, and because the Holy Spirit renews Christ’s life in us regularly. Our communal life needs to be experienced to be known. So come visit us on Sunday for worship at either 4:30pm or 10:30am and get a snapshot. Or visit one of our partner organizations for another snapshot. Best of all, stay around for a long time, working, worshiping, and playing alongside us, to get the clearest picture. We hope that what you see is the Spirit of God using our community to plant seeds of Christ’s Kingdom in our neighbourhood and in our world. We look forward to welcoming you. Even more…we look forward to seeing how God’s embrace of the whole of you will lead you to welcome others to experience the same. A few writings that describe the particular spirit of our community: Seven seeds of the kingdom. Here are the seven “seeds of the Kingdom” that we are all committed to planting in our community and in our own lives: prayer, corporate worship, scriptural reflection, shared life, justice, creation care, and creativity. A helpful lens into the heart and character of Grandview is these four trajectories or movements we pursue: (1) from isolation to community towards radical hospitality; (2) from homogeneity to diversity towards shared life among cultures; (3) from charity to friendship towards seeking justice for the least; (4) from the confrontation of idolatries to repentance towards new life in Christ. Moving along these trajectories helps us to participate in God’s reign and to be liberated from enslavement to the powerful forces of our dominant Western culture such as individualism, consumerism, inequality, and secularism. These four movements are trajectories rather than standards or rules. We are seeking to grow as a community in these trajectories, and each of us finds ourselves at different places as we grow into maturity in Christ. We don’t enter into these movements with a judgemental attitude; rather we enter in by God’s invitation, according to scripture, empowered by the Spirit. Our story of renewal began with this move towards community and hospitality, a move manifested in both the opening up of our church building to our neighborhood and the opening up of our homes to living more of a shared life (which for many has meant living together in a community house). In our first visioning process in the early 90's, we also committed to a hospitality that took seriously the diversity of the neighborhood, a reality which led us to become a church with people from over 30 countries and a wider cultural expression of community life. As we journeyed together with newcomers and the poor and marginalized, we become much more aware of the systemic barriers of injustice that people faced, which in turn led us to rediscover the Bible’s call to seek justice for the least and to pursue that goal. As we have pursued these signs of God's kingdom, we have become aware of the barriers within us and within our community that block us from going further in these gospel practices. That reality has called us deeper into the naming and confessing of our own idolatries so that we might live into the fullness of God’s renewed world. The journey is not complete but we continue to press onward on these pathways that we might together live more deeply into God's vision for creation.
