AHAVAT OLAM SYNAGOGUE

Mission Statement

Ahavat Olam is a progressive, activist synagogue in Vancouver, BC, that welcomes everyone – people of all backgrounds, affiliations and orientations. Ahavat Olam is a key partner of Peace Meal.

About This Cause

Since the first meal in April 2005, our group served a monthly lunch at First United Church in the downtown east side, once a month, until COVID in early 2020. When COVID subsided we resumed service out of the DTES Neighborhood House (DTES-NH) as First United Church undergoes significant rebuilding. While we can't serve as many patrons out of the DTES-NH, we have continued to serve not only food but a caring and human environment which supports our patrons nutrition and social needs. The Peace Meal program (formerly Feed the Hungry) came out of one of several discussion groups that began more than 15 years ago between members of the Masjid ul-Haqq Mosque and Congregation Ahavat Olam, along with representatives of other faiths. A small cluster of local Muslims and Jews wanted to come together to build bridges across the faiths that held mutual distrust and suspicion. Over time, we expanded from our foundation as a project focusing on Muslim and Jewish cooperation to one that still includes many participants from any background who wish to make a difference in the lives of the people of the downtown east side.
