Mission Statement
Since 1978, Green Calgary has been an urban environmental charity and leading voice for local environmental action. We are dedicated to healthy homes, communities, and businesses by offering an evolving array of programs and services to support the adoption of practices addressing current and emergent environmental issues. We seek a world-class city that serves as a model for environmentally sustainable and healthy communities. A multi-layered, educational approach has helped us support tens of thousands of Calgarians in leading a greener lifestyle because we know that only by working together can we ensure a healthy city and a healthy planet.
About This Cause
Our programs empower Calgarians to take green action in their homes, work places, schools & communities. Working collaboratively with community partners and supported by the generosity of our sponsors and individual donors, we have made measurable impact everyday through our unique environmental programming and services. Our program success is the most evident in our annual rain barrel program. Since 2012, we have sold over 10,000 rain barrels which has the potential to save over 27,000,000 litres of water annually. Together with the City of Calgary, we supported over 20,000 households in installing and maintaining rain barrels to manage water usage and flood mitigation effectively. Aside from our Rain Barrel Program, we also take a comprehensive approach to sustainability by offering variety of programs: Green Homes & Communities Formerly known as Healthy Homes, this program has helped hundreds of Calgarians incorporate simple & affordable green options into everyday living. From reducing the toxins we put into local waterways; to reducing household waste; to making responsible food-buying choices; to re-thinking energy use; we offer all kinds of ways to lower your eco footprint and live a greener life. Green Workplace This award winning program has helped hundreds of organizations achieve their desired environmental outcomes. We offer services to help businesses large or small. Whether you are a novice in making your business more sustainable or a seasoned veteran looking to challenge your company to become a leader in sustainability excellence, we can help reduce your company's carbon footprint. Green Kids & Generation Green Our Green Kids program is offered to schools and community groups year round; and is an opportunity for children from kindergarten to Grade 6 to experience hands on environmental education. Each presentation is designed to work directly with curriculum so educators can easily incorporate the program into their learning plans. Our specially trained instructors provide all the resources and materials to deliver a collaborative and inquiry based learning experience. Our Generation Green program is offered to schools & community groups for youth grades 7-12 to receive the education, problem-solving skills, and encouragement to make personal changes that promote positive environmental action. Presentations are designed to work alongside curriculum so educators can easily incorporate the program into their learning plans. Our instructors provide all the resources & materials needed to deliver a collaborative and inquiry-based learning experience. Event Greening Services Green Calgary pioneered event greening in our city. We offer innovative services to help you minimize the footprint of your event. We've helped such high profile events as the Calgary Folk Fest hit diversion rates of over 80% for almost a decade - working with event organizers, vendors, volunteers, and the general public. We continue to provide a range of event greening services for non-profit events, community organizations and businesses. EcoStore We adhere to a leading edge procurement policy for all the products we carry and all the proceeds go right back into providing innovative environmental programs for our homes, communities, workplaces and schools. We can help you navigate your landfill, recycling, composting, and rain water management questions.
