Mission Statement

Young Voices Toronto instills the joy of singing and builds confidence in children, by teaching techniques of healthy singing and rudiments of music. We engage choristers through diverse repertoire, movement and interaction, infusing performance with meaning that connects to their hearts and audiences.

About This Cause

Young Voices Toronto was founded as a High Park Girls’ Choir in 1986 by Ann Cooper Gay. During her leadership, the Choir won provincial and national recognition for its unique sound and varied repertoire, which ranged from Hildegard von Bingen to Oscar Peterson and Stephen Hatfield. The High Park Choirs of Toronto became co-ed in the early 90s, and continued its high profile activities in music education, performance and touring. Ms Gay took over the Canadian Children’s Opera Chorus in 2000, conducting both choirs until 2002, when High Park Choirs (now known as Young Voices Toronto) hired an interim Music Director. In July 2004, Artistic Director Zimfira Poloz began developing the sound of Young Voices Toronto using her “phonopedic” method of vocal development. Under her direction, we expanded from three to five choral divisions and drew singers from 71 schools across the GTA. The activity level increased to include international tours, feature performances in major venues, workshops, community performances and local competitions. Artistic Director Maria Conkey joined YVT in September 2017 and continues the exceptional musical legacy created by her predecessors. YVT has been Children's Choir-in-Residence since 2005 at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music.
