Mission Statement
To empower immigrants and refugees to successfully integrate into an inclusive Canadian society.
About This Cause
Umoja Operation Compassion Society is a registered charitable organization founded in 2002, by a family who immigrated from Uganda, Africa over 27 years ago dedicated to empowering newcomer immigrants and refugees to successfully integrate into an inclusive Canadian society. Umoja is focused on welcoming newcomers and providing a place of support in learning and growing as part of the community. Umoja offers various programs for families, serving children 0-18 years old and adults. The needed services that Umoja offers includes an Literacy and Life Skills program for adults, an afterschool program for children 6-12 years old, a parenting program for refugee families with children under 6, a digital literacy and employment program for newcomer women and family outreach services and community integration support. Migrating and adapting to a new country can be a challenging experience for anyone just in trying to navigate a new social landscape. For newcomer immigrants and refugees the barriers to transitioning into a new country can be overwhelming and ongoing. These barriers can include little or no English language competency, unemployment, lack of affordable housing, transportation, having to navigate challenging and complex social systems, isolation, feelings of hopelessness, mental health challenges especially for those who have fled for their life, lost loved ones, lived in a constant state of fear and anxiety, been displaced and lived in refugee camps experiencing trauma. Umoja inherently recognizes that a new family settling in Canada comes as a unit and must be provided service in a holistic way. Umoja provides specific programming tailored to the newcomer community that reduces barriers and promotes active participation through unique programming and an outreach based approach. Umoja provides a culturally sensitive and welcoming space for newcomer families to experience new opportunities, learn, grow and be involved in the community during their integration to Canada.
