About This Cause
We invite you to be inspired and join us to help support vulnerable seniors in our city. You can create a better life for them today, and a brighter future for all of us tomorrow. Today, more and more seniors face poverty, isolation, loneliness, transportation and mobility challenges, mental health concerns and even abuse. Unfortunately, they are facing these issues with less family or other social supports. Children move away, neighbours are disconnected, and social services and seniors’ benefits have been reduced or cut. These seniors are suffering in silence and need our help. Calgary Seniors offers our elders hope, friendship and dignity through our wide range of volunteer programs and social work outreach support – all free of charge. These are vital services that many seniors can easily access and afford, but thankfully, we are there for those seniors who cannot. Essential supports: Escorted Transportation volunteers offer much needed transportation to medical appointments for seniors who need more ‘arm-in-arm’ support than transit, a taxi or Access Calgary provide. Practical Kindness Volunteers step in and help in urgent and crisis situations, such as a sudden move due to a dangerous situation, rides to see a spouse who is in hospital, or trips to the food bank. Shopping Companions help seniors with shopping when they can’t manage on their own or afford delivery. Emotional and social support: Phone Friends volunteers provide a friendly voice and someone to talk to by calling and checking-in with isolated seniors so that someone knows they are okay. Friendly Visitors provide weekly visits to lonely seniors who lack family and social support, often taking them out on social outings, providing a connection to community. Innovative supports: Pet Assist volunteers help seniors properly care for their pets including exercise, grooming and even a pet food bank when seniors are forced to choose between food for their pets or themselves. Caring Companion volunteers provide much needed respite for seniors who are caregiving for an ailing spouse.
