Mission Statement
To ensure no one in our community ever goes hungry.
About This Cause
We are the registered food bank for Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows and are a member of Food Banks Canada and Food Banks BC. The Friends in Need Food Bank runs several programs to bring food to our community: a perishable food recovery program which provides a consistent source of fresh product, a Senior's Food Bank, School District 42 Meal/Snack program for senior schools, alternative ed programs and Indigenous programs, home delivery to individuals who are unable to attend the food bank or are in supportive housing. Further, we work with and support over twenty other organizations and agencies within our community who have identified a need for food security. By working together, we can get closer to our goal of ensuring no one in our community ever goes hungry. Perishable Food Recovery In June 2019, we established our Perishable Food Recovery Program. This program connects us with unsold, perishable food in the community which we pick up on a daily basis from all of the major grocers in our community. As of January 2025, we have collected and processed over 2.9 million kilograms of food that otherwise would have gone to waste. By diverting food from the landfills, we have also been able to save over six million kg. of CO2 emissions. The value of the food we have repurposed for charities has a value of over $11 million. Every day, we pick up totes containing perishable food which is sorted at our perishable food recover facility and it is sorted into categories: 1. Food fit for human consumption, which we distribute through the Food Bank and our community partners - 78% 2. Fit for animal feed, which local farmers pick up to feed their animals. - 19% 3. Compost. - 3% We are proud to be part of the solution of reducing food waste in our community and increasing the amount of food we can share with those in need.
