Mission Statement
The Nidus Personal Planning Resource Centre is a non-profit, charitable organization. Nidus provides information to British Columbians about personal planning. We also operate a centralized Registry for personal planning documents. Personal planning is about making legal arrangements in the event you need assistance managing your affairs due to illness, injury or disability. Personal planning can address a variety of situations and needs.
About This Cause
Nidus is the centre for excellence on Personal Planning and a world leader on supported decision making as an alternative to loss of rights through guardianship for adults whose capability to 'understand the nature and effect' is in question. Nidus provides information and assistance to the public on Representation Agreements and other personal planning documents through: - assisting individuals by phone, email and in person; answering frequently asked questions for the public through the website - conducting information seminars for the public, professionals, volunteers and staff of community organizations - producing publications and videos for the public; sharing stories of people's experiences and make available on the website - offering self-help kits to make a Representation Agreement with Section 7 standard powers and Section 9 broader powers - producing and distributing an online newsletter - raising awareness and providing education through promotion of annual Personal Planning Month activities - partnering with seniors organizations to train and support volunteers to meet with local seniors and offer in-person help to access online information, legal forms and the Registry service so they can prepare for incapacity, end-of-life and other support needs. Nidus built and operates an online community-based, self-managed Registry (centralized repository) that is supported by the public and promoted by the BC Government. The Registry allows for storing of important information and documents related to quality-of-life and allows for granting viewing access to others who may need to know (health care/financial/government institutions as well as trusted advisors and members of the individual's personal network). The Registry operates according to privacy legislation and is built to facilitate registration of legal documents such as Representation Agreements, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Advance Directives, Living Wills, Wills, as well as other information documents that might be needed in times of crisis - e.g. copy of passport in case of theft, home/rental insurance policy in case of fire/flood/earthquake, etc.
