Mission Statement
Empowering women to belong and make meaningful contributions to the community.
About This Cause
Making Changes Association (MCA) is a non-profit charity that supports women, those who identify as women, and adolescent girls. Our goal is to empower women and teen girls with the tools, confidence, and skills they need to fully participate in the community, secure financial independence, and pursue meaningful work and educational opportunities. We serve more than 2,800+ women and teenage girls annually through the efforts of our dedicated staff and over 250 volunteers. A powerful combination of pre-employment training and Canadian business dress personal style consulting has helped thousands of low income, newcomer, and indigenous women integrate and succeed within Calgary's workforce. Women transitioning from unemployment to employment face a unique set of challenges, from understanding corporate culture to building an appropriate wardrobe, often without a support system to help them navigate this daunting change. The women who come to our program face financial barriers. They are seeking employment, returning to school or volunteering. While many of our participants are highly educated women who have been accredited in other countries, they find themselves re-establishing their careers with limited family or community support. As a female centered organization, we offer four core programs that are strategically connected to one another with the common objective of empowering women in all facets of their lives: Dress for Success Calgary (DFSC) and My Best Friend’s Closet (MBFC) programs build self-confidence by providing education and no-cost quality, functional clothing, accessories, footwear and toiletries to women and teenage girls. Our unique approach involves one-on-one consultations that empower participants to collaborate with their stylist to build an appropriate and functional wardrobe for work or school. The Women in Technology program is an integrated skills training program that combines employability skills upgrading, employment power skills, technical training in Full Stack Web Development, and hands-on work experience to produce employment outcomes for unemployed or underemployed immigrant and indigenous women in Calgary. The Employment and Life Skills (ELS) program is a pre-employment program. The program aims to support immigrant women by providing them with the tools necessary to identify their skills, values, and interests and succeed in the Canadian workforce. Participants develop skills such as assertiveness, self-efficacy, career planning, information retrieval, and employment search. The clothing programs (DFSC) and (MBFC) along with the skills offered through the Employment and Life Skills (ELS) and the Women in Technology program (WIT), promote leadership, belonging, and confidence, encouraging our participants and volunteers to be active in the community and in the city. That is what makes us a unique organization; we build community and create collaborative partnerships. Our annual fundraising event: Powerful You! Luncheon will take place on May 2, 2024.
