Mission Statement
CHHA-Ed is a non-profit, self-help, charitable organization by and for persons who are hard of hearing. Hearing loss interferes with our most vital link to people... communications through language and sound. The effects of this invisible disability can be profound.
About This Cause
Our mission is to increase awareness and remove barriers for hard of hearing persons in the Greater Edmonton area by providing support, programs and advocacy. General meetings, special events and activities, newsletters, Conversational American Sign Language classes, Speechreading & Coping Skill Classes, and Your Third Ear workshops are some of the programs and services offered. Our vision is to be a progressive, dynamic organization working towards full inclusion of Hard of Hearing persons. To this purpose we have members who are active participants who work with and are on the boards of agencies that can and do make a difference in the lives of citizens in the Greater Edmonton area. As we work toward full inclusion for hard of hearing persons we are proud of our on going achievements, including: * Facilitating installation of Loop Listening Systems in select live theatres and facilities. * Our Hearing Assistance Fund * Annual Scholarships for post-secondary students. * Advocacy for access to improve life with technical hearing devices and technology * Initiated policy with The City of Edmonton to provide CART at all public events and by request for all other city events. * Hospital Kits Program for Hard of Hearing patients when medical is required making sure awareness and understanding are communicated to patients. * Speechreading & Coping Skill classes, Beginner Level Conversational ASL classes, and Drop-In Speechreading Practice provide language and communication through visual language. Communication makes inclusion possible. CHHA-Ed continue to provide both Real-Time Captioning, portable Loop System/Assistive Living Devices at all CHHA-Ed meetings and public events.
