About This Cause
Established in 1988, Chrysalis Society is a registered Canadian charity that runs 3 addiction recovery homes for marginalized women in Vancouver. All of the women in our homes rely on income assistance and most are homeless upon entry. The women in our care are able to stay in our homes for up to 2 years or longer with our subsidized housing program. On average, 25% of our clients are youth (age 19-24), 45% are Indigenous, 90% are homeless upon arrival and all have complex mental and physical health needs. Over 100 women a year on average pass through our homes and our alumnae community is over 2,100 women strong. We average 100 clients a year through our 3 homes (24 beds). Our New Day home is Indigenous run and led. Low-Barrier: Chrysalis has a long-standing reputation for working with highly marginalized women living with complex mental and/or medical health barriers. Chrysalis accepts women who are prescribed opiate replacement therapies (Methadone, Methadose or Suboxone) and/or benzodiazepines (ie: Ativan or Valium) - medicines that often hinder eligibility for other inpatient addiction programs. A majority of the women accessing our programs have lengthy – sometimes generational - histories of systems- and street-entrenchment, which create further complications in their recovery processes. Non-Institutional, Home-Like Environments: By providing indoor & outdoor home environments that are beyond minimal, we reduce the added impacts of stigmas related to addiction and poverty. Women learn through experience that they deserve more than mere basic survival. They learn how to include nurturing self-care and comfort in their own recovery. They learn & discover their own extraordinary worth, and how to give it value. “Homes” vs. “Institution” = Chrysalis provides truly home-like environments in residential houses. Women share a beautiful home with their peers in recovery. Chrysalis homes are indistinguishable from any other home in the neighborhoods they share (New Dawn & New Day are located in the Mount Pleasant area of Vancouver; New Way is located in the Marpole area of Vancouver).
