Mission Statement
We partner with communities in Latin America to empower them to assert their democratic, economic, cultural and social rights. We strive to improve quality of life by addressing needs such as education, vocational training, food security, clean water, health care and education so that communities may become self-sustaining.
About This Cause
Sombrilla is an Alberta-based charity that partners with NGOs and communities in Latin America to provide support for the work they are doing to sustainably strengthen their communities. Presently we have projects in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala and Peru and we are supporting projects in education, food security and access to justice for women. Our primary project is Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) in Honduras where 700+ persons who do not have access to education beyond grade 6, are able to access grade 7, 8 and 9 educaction using the Honduran curriculum which has been loaded on stand alone computers. The program is very flexible in its delivery and so is able to accommodate the needs of disadvantaged persons. Graduates of the program often have an advantage over graduates from the conventional system in that they then possess significant computer skills.
