Mission Statement
The Housing Help Centre combats the issues that result in homelessness before it happens. We recognize that each individual deserves safe, secure and affordable housing and are dedicated to the principles of fairness and compassion. We support our clients in becoming healthy, self-sufficient and safely housed through equitable access to community resources and connecting to appropriate housing
About This Cause
Since 2001, The Housing Help Centre (THHC) has been at the forefront of the hidden homelessness epidemic in Scarborough and York Region. Our work connects low- and middle-income people and families with safe, affordable housing, and helps keep them housed long-term. Our holistic services address the root causes of homelessness such as hunger, abuse, newcomer issues and loss of income as well as practical matters such as locating housing in the tough GTA markets. Our offices in Scarborough and York Region are accessible and provide services in over 20 languages. We typically serve over 5,000 people a year across our many services, including: • Housing searches, placements, and mediation with landlords • Services for survivors of family violence • A Food Bank and hot breakfast program • Streets to homes programming, supporting people experiencing chronic homelessness and other shelter users • Mental health counselling • Case Management (tactical life skills support) • Access to governmental rent-geared-to-income housing • Home skills workshops including budgeting and shopping, as well as landlord and tenant rights • Newcomer and refugee services including accessing OHIP cards and demystifying the school system • Providing no interest loans for short-term rent costs
