Mission Statement
Our mission is to create an inclusive and supportive society, where all Calgarians have equitable access to every aspect of the good that Canada has to offer.
About This Cause
To visible minorities, marginalized groups, and new immigrants, Diversecities is a community service organization that assists in four key areas of life: Economic Integration, Social Connection, Well-being, and Learning. We build long term relationships with our clients as we empower them, encourage them, and guide them along the path to reaching their full potential. Our organization runs six major programs: 1. The Child & Youth program provides a safe and motivating environment for youth to explore, acquire, and practice their social skills. Its main activities include after-school programs such as art education and lion dance classes. The art education is therapeutic and fits with our Mental Well-Being program. We also offer career counseling which guides youth to consider their future. The tickets we collect and distribute from sponsors, such as the zoo, to our young clients allow them to participate in healthy activities, as do our summer programs. 2. The Law & Advocacy program connects under-represented groups facing language and cultural barriers with mainstream legal institutions. We also assist individuals in navigating legal issues with one-on-one counseling and build community capacity through legal literacy education programs. 3. The Bridge program promotes social inclusion and connection for clients facing language or cultural barriers. This program creates opportunities for people to participate in the local community. The program runs various social groups, such as women’s groups, the Buddies Group, the Newcomers Group, and the Youth Lion Dance Club. These groups help their participants integrate into the broader community through their interaction with others and through activities that put them in contact with the broader community. The program also provides an annual tax clinic that assists clients in preparing their taxes. 3. The Community Education program has nurtured cross-cultural connections through ESL classes and life skills development sessions adapted to meet clients' linguistic and cultural challenges. DIY Newcomers has provided manual home ownership skills to newcomers. 4. The Anti-Racism program raises awareness of racism, increases access to anti-racism educational materials and resources, and provides opportunities for community members to learn, share knowledge, and be involved in conversations on racism. Specific activities include producing educational workshops, podcasts, short videos, articles, and brochures. The Community Action Plan conducted a community scan to learn more about newcomers from South, Southeast, and East Asian communities and how they perceive information and access services. 5. The Food Security program provides food hampers to low-income families and individuals who experience language, social, financial, and cultural barriers in accessing food. 6. The Mental Well-Being program supports young people who are facing stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. It trains and certifies youth to provide peer support. Art therapy is also used to provide specialized individual or group therapy for youth and young adults diagnosed with depression, HDAD, or other mental challenges. The program also produces and broadcasts the Mental Well-Being videos on Diversecities’ social media platform and it hosts practicum students from Sundance College’s Social Work program.
