Mission Statement
Healthier students are better learners, and Ever Active Schools believes that every student deserves to belong to a healthy school community. Using the internationally-recognized Comprehensive School Health (CSH) framework, we work to create healthy environments in which our students can effectively learn. We engage the entire broad school community: students, parents, teachers, administrators, district leaders, community partner organizations, and everyone in between. Every school is different; so Ever Active Schools approaches every project with the knowledge that unique contexts need unique solutions.
About This Cause
Ever Active Schools began in 2001 as a special project of the Health and Physical Education Council (HPEC) of the Alberta Teachers' Association (ATA). Its goal was to provide professional development opportunities for health and physical education teachers in Alberta. Over the years, Ever Active Schools expanded to offer grant-funded project work, classroom resources and numerous partnership opportunities. In 2020, Ever Active Schools transitioned to a standalone national charity, governed by a board of directors based in Alberta to be a platform for thought leadership, coordination, and awareness for the importance of upstream approaches to healthy school communities. At Ever Active Schools, we value relationships, innovation, diversity, contributing and well-being. Our work begins as collaborators, is built as partners and continues in friendship. We show up for each other and our communities, act with empathy and bring our authentic selves to work every day. We celebrate successes, BIG and small – you can count on us for hugs and high fives. We’re nimble and creative, always looking ahead with our feet firmly grounded in evidence. We balance risk with strategy. Boldly going…you know the rest. We recognize and value diverse abilities, identities, cultures and ways of knowing. We live it. We celebrate it. We don’t know all of the answers but we’re listening, learning and growing. We seek first to understand, then act. We’re here to help ideas and actions flourish. We provide opportunities and platforms to build capacity to promote health and learning. We’re passionate about well-being, and we care. We’re committed to creating environments that support health, learning, and growth because that’s the type of place we want to live and work in. In 2020/21, we worked with 802 school and community-based programs, navigating the unprecedented impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. With more than 2,100 schools in Alberta, we can still greatly expand our reach to positively impact more students, families and communities. As an experienced partner in school health, Ever Active Schools has relationships that drive impact at a community level: established partnerships across the health, education, recreation and active living sectors; participation on 64 local, regional and provincial inter-agency committees; direct partnerships with urban, rural, First Nations and Métis School Communities in Alberta; and established relationships with schools, communities and government.
