BREAKAWAY COMMUNITY SERVICES

TORONTO, Ontario, M6K3E6 Canada

Mission Statement

Breakaway is a dynamic multifunction substance use treatment agency that provides a range of high-quality outpatient and outreach programs for the residents of Toronto. We are passionately committed to providing innovative community services from a harm reduction perspective. We strive to make our programs fully accessible to all community members, particularly those who frequently encounter barriers to traditional services.

About This Cause

Since its inception in 1989, Breakaway Community Services has demonstrated a strong capacity for continuously adapting to emerging challenges. It has done this by adding to its own broad range of treatment programs for clients and by forging strong service partnerships across the mental health and addictions sectors to facilitate additional access to a multitude of support for them. Besides our office-based programs, we have effectively mobilized our resources to be active and present in delivering services for clients within the community, in schools, community centres, shelters, and supportive housing. Breakaway’s programs are designed to reach some of the most vulnerable people in our city, who often have trouble accessing other forms of support. We have programming for youth and members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Our outreach services are specifically targeted to support youth, seniors, and women. Many of our clients are low-income and/or unhoused. Breakaway current runs eight programs, each designed to meet a diversity of substance use support needs in our community. For over 30 years, Breakaway has been providing substance use support for youth and their families. More recently, the organization has grown to include two outreach teams that are designed to reach those who face barriers accessing traditional services, a drop-in program for LGBTQIA2S youth, an opioid treatment clinic, and a supportive housing program. Since 2020, we have introduced two new programs: A grief and loss support program for frontline workers and Through Ruff Times, which supports people and their pets as they experience various challenges. With a team of staff who are deeply engaged in and responsive to the communities they serve, Breakaway’s services are constantly expanding to better meet our clients’ needs. As our organization has grown over the years, so too has our service team's capacity to better serve our clients. Our staff all take a client-centered, individualized approach whilst integrating their lived-in experiences and wisdom into their daily practices. We take pride in the staff’s ability to show a depth of positivity, support, and compassion in their work. SATELLITE OPIOID TREATMENT: The Satellite is a community-based outpatient opioid addiction treatment service. The Satellite provides comprehensive services to people who are facing challenges related to their use of opioid drugs. HARM REDUCTION OUTREACH: Our HRCS team is guided by the principals of harm reduction, which is to reduce any potential challenges or barriers that may arise for individuals who are using substances. We also have a commitment to ensuring that all individuals accessing our services have access to social justice support, meaning we advocate for the respect and dignity of those who use substances. FAMILY & YOUTH INITIATIVE: This initiative is an outpatient program developed to meet the needs of youth, aged 12 to 25, and their family members and friends who are struggling with substance use concerns. Services are provided from a harm reduction approach in a supportive, non-judgmental manner. TORONTO OPIATE SUPPORT TEAM: The Toronto Opiate Support Team (TOST) operates in various locations throughout Toronto as an outreach team to engage with and advocate for people who are using opiates and replacement medications, and have little or no access to supportive services. We work collaboratively with agencies and programs in the community to offer holistic, compassionate, accessible, and flexible ongoing or short-term support. ADDICTION SUPPORTIVE HOUSING: The Supportive Housing program is available to individuals who are currently housed in our program only, are 16+ have problematic substance use, and require stable housing. The program is offered in partnership with Regeneration Community Services. PIECES TO PATHWAYS: Pieces to Pathways (P2P) is a peer-led initiative offering Canada’s first substance use support program for LGBTQIA2S+ youth ages 16-29. All services are free and delivered by queer and trans staff with their own experiences of substance use and recovery. THROUGH RUFF TIMES: The connection between people and pets is significant and sometimes one of the most important, fulfilling relationships in one’s life. Through Ruff, Times aims to reduce barriers for people with pets who may experience poverty, homelessness, mental health and substance use, violent living conditions, and/or any other self-identified challenges. We offer pet care options so that people do not need to make a “choice” between accessing support or losing their animal companion. Along with our volunteer RUFF Sitter Team, we provide no-cost, temporary pet care for up to 3-months.
