Mission Statement
When we call 911 - Police, Fire or EMS show up - to help us, to save our lives and provide safety to our community. So does our Canadian Armed Forces - serving locally and internationally with peace keeping and so much more to keep our country safe and help others. What happens when they call for help? How about those who serve in the jails? There is progress and awareness around First Responder and Military Personnel mental health, but there still is a stigma of a helper asking for help. There is significant concern for their job safety. The men and women in uniform are skilled, tough and know what they are doing. They are good at what they do. The reality is though, their mental well being does get affected by what they see, hear and deal with. They help us when we are at our worst in health, crime, disaster, danger. They run into what we run away from. Post Traumatic Stress, Operational and Occupational Stress Injuries occur. Sometimes this also includes suicide. Could you do their job?
About This Cause
The unique challenges of the Peace Officer, Fire Fighter, Emergency Medical Services, 911 Dispatch and Military Professions is why Legacy Place Society exists. We started the charity because of suicides with First Responders in Southern Alberta. Simply put, the sights, sounds, carnage, crime, terrorism, threats, danger, natural disasters and more have a direct impact on the mental well being of our First Responders and Military Personnel. It also carries vicarious trauma to the entire family on the home front. Our mission is to build family resiliency and legacies of hope and optimism despite these challenges. To not lose any of the families to mental health breakdowns, suicides or unnecessary health related early retirement/death or divorce. The Charity does not replace any of the typical Employee Assistance Programs and is not a duplication of existing charities. Our work is done while acting as a bridge between the professional lives and their families in collaboration with the membership, professional resources and other standing Charities specific to each individual membership. Our core values include Family, Empathy, Diversity, Inclusivity, Confidentiality, Collaboration and Integrity. Our objectives are about providing relevant and practical resources to help in early interventions, introduce resiliency possibilities and leave lasting legacies with the individual and family that is currently serving or retired. These resources help reduce the stigma and create constructive/supportive conversation around First Responder and Military Personnel mental health and suicide awareness Including: • accommodations support where possible during times of medical or personal crisis (including over 38,000 nightly stays within our current 4 locations of Calgary, Edmonton and Red Deer) • peer to peer conversation support volunteers in the areas of marriage, parenting, grief, spiritual wellness, addiction recovery, single parenting, special needs children, and PTSD recovery to name a few • family camp support that creates cost effective opportunities and provide family time together • family resiliency workshops – occasionally partnered with other like organizations to provide a variety of topics that include mental health readiness, addictions, trauma, suicide, parenting, special needs and marriage • annual First Responder and Military Personnel Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Conferences • benevolence and legacy tribute – opportunities to provide a service person additional support thru their peers during times of medical or family loss situations and or in creating a Legacy of Life Tribute - a tree will be planted or appropriate memorial activity can be designated at the Legacy Place Tribute Memorial Garden & Guest House for first responders, veterans and military personnel located at 25207 Bearspaw Place Calgary - this is an 8 acre beautiful location 4 minutes North West of Calgary. • education bursaries – in situations where designated funding becomes available, opportunities to receive an education bursary may be possible • web based go to resource with articles and links to support overall family wellness that includes resources specific to the Peace Officer, Fire Fighter, Emergency Medical Services, 911 Dispatch and Military Personnel • community and business driven First Responders Day's that bring everyone together and say thank you to our courageous men and women We thank you in advance for supporting Legacy Place Society.
