Mission Statement
Oxford House provides safe and affordable housing for individuals in recovery
About This Cause
Oxford residents are empowered to take responsibility for their own recovery and make valuable contributions in their community by gaining employment or going to school. Recovery without relapse is possible in an Oxford home. Each home forms its own family and is situated in a suburban neighbourhood away from danger areas. Through staff support and peer support from other residents, people in recovery find understanding and hope while learning how to live with life’s challenges. Founded in 1995, Oxford House Foundation of Canada is a non-profit organization that provides self-run, peer-supported sober recovery homes for men and women who have a history of substance abuse and are homeless or at risk of homelessness. By providing a safe and stable environment where men and women can focus on their recovery, Oxford House supports individuals to develop the skills necessary for self-sufficiency and successful reintegration back into society. Oxford House has 28 recovery homes operating in Calgary and Edmonton. Oxford House is designed to address the needs of adult men and women who: • Need a sober living environment to continue their recovery from addiction • Have received residential treatment in the past year • May be homeless or at risk of homelessness • May have a history of involvement with the criminal justice system • May have a history of trauma and/or childhood abuse • Are prepared to re-integrate back into society • Are Aboriginal or non-Aboriginal Oxford House's program goal is to ensure that individuals recovering from addiction have long-term sobriety and skills for self-sufficiency to successfully re-integrate into the community This goal is accomplished through the following objectives: • Provision of a safe and supportive home environment • Promoting a sober social network • Facilitating peer support within the house • Supporting members to learn life skills for self-sufficiency • Reconnecting members to Aboriginal cultural and spiritual identity • Supporting members to increase their coping skills and self-efficacy to abstain from substance abuse Oxford House members surveyed in 2015 reported a number of factors that promoted their recovery success in the program. The peer support model was noted as highly effective because it provides an atmosphere of support with others who are experiencing a similar journey and who share the same goal of abstinence. Members are also able to recognize when someone is struggling and intervene with support before a person relapses. Members noted that being in an Oxford House provides fellowship, accountability, and opportunities to develop life skills for self-sufficiency in a safe and supportive environment. “I am now full of hope for a happy, healthy, successful and productive sober life ahead and that has been made possible by my stay here at Oxford House. It has been the safety net that caught me when all else failed. It is a bridge that helped me until I grew strong enough to build up my life again. I will remain forever grateful for this time and place. Certainly there are many others out there in this city tonight who would benefit greatly from an Oxford House. They are saving lives here.” - Oxford resident
