About This Cause
Aphasia Centre of Ottawa is a unique community-based agency dedicated to the long-term support of people affected by aphasia. Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder caused by injury to the brain that affects a person's ability to process information involving the use of words. Often described as people who "know more than they can say" (Kagan) alluding to their reduced ability to express themselves using speech, individuals with aphasia may also have difficulty understanding what others are saying, and with reading and writing. Overall severity of communicative impairment can vary greatly. Regardless of the severity of aphasia, the impact of this disability can be devastating leading to social isolation, depression and family breakdown. The Aphasia Centre of Ottawa (ACO) is a respected, cost effective, accountable health and social services delivery agency, providing a broad range of community-based and family-focused interventions. ACO services enhance the capability of people with aphasia and their families to continue living healthy lives and remain in their homes through communication therapy, counselling, ongoing support, and advocacy. The Centre's services are often essential to ensure that persons affected by aphasia have equal access to quality health care and social services. Aphasia is typically a Chronic Disability, requiring long-term support. Unfortunately, the financial resources to ensure access to appropriate intervention are often short-term or indeed, for many, non-existent outside the hospital-based health care system.
