Mission Statement

Our mission is to contribute to addressing the full range of health determinants (physical, social, economic and cultural) and support the creation and sustenance of community health programs within the communities we live in. Our mission also includes providing meaningful and sustainable support to victims of epidemics, especially orphans and vulnerable children in Ethiopia and the horn region.

About This Cause

CORE PROGRAMS Orphan Sponsorship P2P’s Orphan sponsorship program for Orphans and vulnerable children in Ethiopia provides all basic necessities of life including shelter, food, clothing, education, and health care for the orphans in the program. The program has been in place since the founding of P2P and it is delivered in Ethiopia through a well-managed partnership with two reputable local NGOs – Hiwot Integrated Development Organization (HIDO) and Hanna Orphan Homes (HOH). Over the past 22 years, the program has benefited several hundred orphans, many of whom have successfully completed their education and have become productive citizens. There are currently 251 orphans being supported by the OSP program, with plans to steadily add more. While HIV/AIDS related deaths in Ethiopia have decreased significantly, UNICEF estimates that the HIV/AIDS orphan population is still in the tens of thousands, many of whom do not receive the kind of comprehensive support that P2P provides to the children under its care. The sponsorship program has consistently maintained a zero-overhead model. P2P engages in separate fundraising activities to cover program administration costs. Of the 250 children who are currently in the program, 224 are supported by 131 sponsors while the remaining 26 are directly supported by P2P. Recently, P2P has made important progress in digitizing the OSP program administration. This has improved data accessibility, efficiency, reporting and communication flow. Mental Health Based upon publicly available community needs assessments and landmark community mental health studies like the Capstone report of 2019 that is focused on vulnerable community groups, and upon the direction set at the preceding AGM, P2P decided to expand its mandate to contribute to alleviating mental health challenges in the community with a focus on young people. The P2P community mental health engagement that is led by youthful P2P volunteers under the Sound the Horn (STH) banner was launched in 2019. Utilizing a small grant from the Resource Foundation, the group was able to take foundational steps including framing the program, developing reference materials and conducted a limited scope pilot program. The STH group is now gearing up to engage specific segments of young community members in a “Transitions Program” that will utilize virtual and in-person peer to peer discussion groups for the youth to leverage from each other’s experiences as well as learn from invited mental health professionals. The STH group has developed a digital platform and a website (www.soundthehorns.com) for this purpose and is expected to relaunch the program this year in a sustainable manner. P2P and the STH team are also making progress in building strong partnerships with other community based mental health initiatives and will be collaborating with them to leverage their experience, conduct joint projects and expand its reach.
