Mission Statement
The Street Worker's Advocacy Project (SWAP) belongs to the people we serve, providing unconditional acceptance and a healthy environment. We provide programming and services to sexually exploited youth and their families, individuals working in the street sex trade and other marginalized individuals leading to healthier lifestyles and healing.
About This Cause
SWAP has been in operation since July of 1994. We acknowledge the expertise and wisdom of people who have been there and encourage the involvement of experiential people at all levels of the organization. We believe in meeting people where they are at, and recognize that leaving the street life is a process that takes many starts and stops. We build enduring relationships through respectful, dedicated and long term supports. We provide a number of services and programs through the Drop-In Centre including our Youth Outreach Program, HIV Outreach Program, evening Street Outreach Program, Housing Program, and Building Bridges to Employment Program. We also offer a lunch program one day per week. Approximately 2,000 individuals attend the Drop-in Centre on an annual basis. Whether it's a cup of coffee, a chance to get out of the weather, an opportunity to socialize with others in a safe environment, needing help to navigating the legal, health or social service systems, or simply looking for someone who will take the time to listen, staff are available to help with whatever the needs may be. For staff in our Housing, Youth, HIV, and Street Outreach Programs, the majority of their work takes place out in the community, ensuring basic needs are being met, including access to food, shelter and providing support to address health and safety issues. In a separate facility, we also provide an intensive support program for pregnant and early postpartum women struggling with addiction issues. This includes on-site housing, child care, 24 hour staffing, transportation to appointments, and a variety of programs including parenting, addictions, art therapy, family wellness, life skills and trauma therapy.
