Mission Statement

Southern Currents is dedicated to building bridges between Canadian and Latin/Indigenous independent multidisciplinary artists. Southern Currents strives to create platforms for communication that foster dialogue amongst artists, curators and audiences in Canada, Latin America and the world. Our festivals function as a vital Canadian outlet for emerging and established Latin/Indigenous artists living in Canada, Latin America and the diaspora, while our year-round screenings/events promote the development of Latin/Indigenous culture in Ontario.

About This Cause

About aluCinarte Latin American Arts Festival: For our 22nd anniversary, we will be hosting a Multidisciplinary Latin American Arts Festival called “aluCinarte.” The idea for the event was born out of the need to enhance the visibility of Latin American art in Canada. Our goal is to excite Canadian audiences to watch and support our roster of artists/cultural workers by presenting artworks that reflect what aluCine stands for: Excellence and innovation in the arts. This seven-day gathering will include film screenings, live performances, art exhibitions, workshops in the community, sound art, artist talks, as well as panel discussions. All activities will be presented for free. This event is the largest and most important initiative aluCine has undertaken, and is a crucial step toward achieving our artistic vision over the next decade - a vision that sees aluCine moving into a future as a stable and vital organization that speaks for and about the Latinx American experience in Canada. This ambitious Festival is intended to take a vital snapshot of the visual and media arts community across the country, mobilizing us on our most pressing issues and inspiring us for the next decade. With over 60 artists, 30+ invited guests and numerous local curators, producers, scholars, critics and students in attendance, aluCinArte expects an unprecedented gathering, sure to generate a tremendous level of community, industry, and media attention. Our priority will be to employ art workers and artists who self-identify as Indigenous, female, youth, racialized, LGBTQ2, Deaf and/or living with disabilities. This project will further bolster Latinx representation in Canadian art spaces by providing a professional platform for artists to contextualize their work. To increase awareness of media arts from Latinx Canadians among diverse audiences, improve audience understanding of this art, and provide access to artworks by Latinx artists is our primary goal. What is aluCinArte? • A national festival and conference of the Latinx visual and media arts representing producers, presenters, and distributors from across Canada and beyond. • A five-day event featuring outstanding keynotes, interactive discussions, film screenings, performances, and media art installations at venues across Toronto. • An innovative training opportunity for not-for-profit arts workers and individual artists to engage with leaders in their field and connect with both the Canadian and international media arts community. • A vital meeting place of independent media artists from across Canada and beyond, and from diverse cultural communities, in order to encourage networking and collaboration between artists and organizations to develop supportive community partnerships, dialogue, and exchange. Why a National Latinx Contemporary Arts Festival? This will mark the first time in over 25 years that a national conference and festival of this magnitude has been held in Toronto, generating tremendous levels of community, industry, and media attention. Organized by Southern Currents, this event features screenings, exhibitions and panel presentations on topics important to the Latinx media arts sector. The event plays a vital role in supporting independent film, video and new media artists while showcasing cutting-edge works that reflect authentic stories from diverse communities. two large-scale editions of alucinArte took place in the past but the costs of off-screen projects implied the continuation of such initiative until today. With a generous grant from the Dept of Canadian Heritage we aim to bring back a Festival that not only focuses on film but in a program that is inclusive and multidisciplinary.
